Italian police seize 7,000 kilos of Easter-table food items

Rome, March 28 - Police have seized over 7,000 kilograms of fresh pasta and cold cuts throughout Italy in the lead up to Easter, when families traditionally sit down to long meals on Sunday and go out for picnics on the following Monday known as 'Pasquetta' or 'Little Easter'. Inspections carried out by anti-fraud officers in Rome, Parma and Salerno are particularly focused on 'origin designated' (DOP) products such as Parmigiano Reggiano cheese, their traceability and authentic labelling, police said. Italian police, in collaboration with Interpol, are also running authentication checks on suspected counterfeit products marked Made in Italy produced in the United States, such as Modena Balsamic Vinegar with falsified IGP origin-guarantees.
