Pope Francis names successor as Buenos Aires archbishop

Buenos Aires, March 27 - Pope Francis has appointed his successor as archbishop of Buenos Aires, Monsignor Mario Poli, Argentine press sources said on Wednesday. The nomination of the bishop of La Pampa will be officially announced on Thursday and is the first step towards Poli becoming cardinal, reports said. In 2002, Poli was appointed auxiliary bishop to Buenos Aires by John Paul II and then became bishop in the Santa Rosa diocese. The 65-year-old bishop is said to have worked closely with Bergoglio when the new pope was Archbishop of Buenos Aires.
