War of words heats up between politicians over new government

Bersani mocks Grillo as self-styled 'saviour' of Italy

Rome, March 27 - A frustrated Pier Luigi Bersani lost his temper with political opponent Beppe Grillo Wednesday, suggesting the former comedian wrongly sees himself as Italy's only hope for salvation. "Congratulations to the saviours of the country," mocked the centre-left coalition leader shortly after he was slammed by Grillo as one of a group of "whoremongering fathers" among several well-known establishment politicians. Grillo, leader of the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement (M5S) which captured an unexpectedly big protest vote in last month's general election, has refused Bersani's requests that they work together to form a new government. The populist M5S potentially holds the balance of power in parliament after the elections left no political party or coalition with a clear majority in both houses. Grillo rejected Bersani by saying that he, along with ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi and outgoing Premier Mario Monti, "are those who are most responsible for robbing the young generations".
