Rome, March 25 - Snow and ice in parts of northeastern Italy blocked highways, disrupted rail traffic, and closed schools Monday. Forecasters were not optimistic that matters would improve on Tuesday. Trains were halted between Venice and Trieste on Monday due to ice snapping electrical lines, and only diesel trains were expected to make it between Venice and Monfalcone on Tuesday. High-water flooding was also expected to batter Venice on Tuesday. Meanwhile, icy conditions menaced highways around Trieste, where school closures were likely to continue on Tuesday. Winds gusting to speeds up to 120 kilometers per hour were also making conditions extra miserable.
