New speed record set for Internet data transmission

Rome, March 25 - A new world record for data transmission has been set using Italian technology, its developers said Monday. Reaching speeds of up to a trillion bits per second, the record was set in Australia, involving data sent between Sydney and Melbourne. Technology was developed by the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna of Pisa, the National Interuniversity Consortium for Telecommunications (CNIT), the Institute for Communication Technologies, Information and Perception (Tecip) and telecommunications giant Ericsson. "Our next goal is to be able to double the speed by next December," researcher Luca Poti' of Tecip, told ANSA.
