PD leader to tell Napolitano if he can muster majority

Bersani to report back on government bid Thursday

Rome, March 25 - Center-left coalition leader Pier Luigi Bersani will present his progress report to Italian President Giorgio Napolitano on Thursday after he winds up five days of meetings with party leaders, unions and associations to try to forge a government. Bersani is working to muster a majority after Napolitano gave him the mandate on Friday to create cohesion after last month's inconclusive general election. The PD leader's centre-left alliance has a majority in the House but not the Senate. Bersani on Monday met unions, Italy's powerful industrial association Confindustria and Banking Association ABI, among others, while crucial crunch talks with other political parties are scheduled for Wednesday. Media pundits have expressed pessimism over Bersani's chances to successfully form a government and have predicted that Italians will be forced to return to the polls.
