Italian industrial production fell 3.6% in January

Rome, March 19 - Industrial production in recession-hit Italy fell 3.6% in January compared to the same month in 2012 according to seasonally adjusted data, Istat said on Tuesday. The national statistics agency added that the figure represented the 17th consecutive year-on-year drop in industrial output, but added that the negative trend was beginning to slow. On a month-on-month basis production in January grew by 0.8% with respect to December 2012, the biggest rise since August 2011. The sectors registering the strongest year-on-year performance were food, drink and tobacco, up 4.8%, IT and electronics, electrical appliances and clocks up 3.7% and textiles, clothes, leather and accessories up 3.5%. Instead coke and refined petroleum products and vehicle production showed the biggest slump, falling 14.2% and 14% respectively.
