Italian spending on food falls 20 bn euros 2007-2012

Rome, March 13 - Food spending in Italy fell by 20 billion euros, or about 10%, over the five-year period from 2007 to 2012, the Italian food industry group Federalimentare revealed on Wednesday. In 2012 alone, food consumption fell by 6.8 billion euros, or roughly 3%, or "equal to 10 times the market for computers, smartphones and tablets, 10 times cinema box office proceeds, twice the soccer business, and twice the book (market)," reported Federalimentare in its presentation of its 2012 food industry report and forecast for 2013.
