St. Peter's Square statues spruced up ahead of conclave

(see related stories) Rome, March 6 - The Vatican is accelerating renovation work in St. Peter's Square ahead of the upcoming conclave to elect the next pope. Around 30 statues of saints at the top of the colonnade that envelops the square have been covered in nets by workers for restoration operations. The statues are on the right side of the square, which is where the eyes of the world will be directed during the conclave to see what colour the smoke coming out of chimney of the Sistine Chapel is - black if cardinals have not reached a decision, white if a new pope has been elected. The papal apartment, from where the next pope will give his Angelus address every Sunday, is also on the right side of the square.
