Horsegate scandal broadens as checks continue

More pre-packaged foods found with horsemeat in Italy

Rome, March 6 - Another case of pre-packaged food labelled beef but containing horsemeat was found in Star ragu pasta sauce on Wednesday, Italian health authorities said. The company has blocked all goods, called for further checks and recalled the ragu sauce from supermarket shelves around the country. The discovery is the latest in a widening scandal - which has spread to Norway, Russia, Italy, France, and Spain - that began earlier this month when British food company Findus (no relation to Italy's Findus) began to recall prepared products, including lasagna, after discovering it was made with horsemeat rather than beef as promised on the package.
