Demand for rental apartments in Rome jumps ahead of conclave

Increased flexibility and lower prices than hotels a big draw

Demand for rental apartments in Rome jumps ahead of conclave

Rome, March 5 - Although no date has yet been announced for the start of the conclave to select a successor to Benedict XVI, demand for rentals in Rome for the period March 11-17 has skyrocketed by 30%, according to an online rental site. According to casavacanza.it the increased flexibility and often lower prices of rental apartments compared to hotels are strong elements of appeal to tourists coming to the city during the selection of the new pope. "In the last few days, not only has the number of apartments available for short-term lets increased, but owners of apartments which have been on the site for months have recently rushed to modify their descriptions, pointing out their proximity to the Vatican or their closeness to public transport," Francesco Lorenzoni, the head of casavacanza.it said. Lorenzoni also said that many prices had been raised, bringing them to high-season levels.
