Institutions must promote legality, Florence mayor says

Florence, March 5 - Building a Mafia-free future depends on creating a culture of honesty and legality, Mayor Matteo Renzi from the Italian Democratic Party (PD) wrote on Tuesday. "Institutions at every level must promote a culture of legality and a sense of democracy," the mayor wrote in a message ahead of the 18th day of remembrance of Mafia victims, to be held in Florence on March 16. The day of remembrance falls on the 20th anniversary of the so-called Via dei Georgofili massacre on May 27, 1993, when a car bomb explosion left five people dead. "Florence does not forget her victims, as she does not forget magistrates like Giovanni Falcone, Paolo Borsellino, Rosario Livatino, Gabriele Chelazzi, and many others," Renzi wrote in reference to the many prosecutors felled by Mafia assassinations. "Our youth can help us build a different future, which is why we must educate them and involve them," Renzi also wrote.
