Maradona wants to clear 'tax evader' from his name

Rome, February 25 - Former Argentina soccer great Diego Maradona who arrived in Rome Monday wants to clear his name as a tax dodger, his attorney Angelo Pisani said. "Maradona will come to Italy because he promised he would and because he loves the country," Pisani told reporters at Fiumicino airport waiting for the retired Argentinian player who helped Napoli win two Serie A crowns and a UEFA Cup. Italian tax authorities claim that the footballer owes them approximately 40 million euros for unpaid taxes on off-the-books earnings in sponsorship and merchandising deals from his time at Napoli. "Maradona has the utmost respect for Italian institutions and wants to meet with the tax authorities to evaluate their documentation," Pisani said. Maradona will watch the Udinese-Napoli game on television "with friends" in his former home city of Naples and on Tuesday hold a press conference before flying to Madrid, Pisani said.
