Monti warns against destructive populism

Florence, February 22 - Outgoing technocrat Premier Mario Monti on Friday warned against destructive populism and called for a new Italian renaissance during his final appeal to voters ahead of general elections on February 24 and 25. "Populism wants to take advantage of people's anger to wreck everything and shut off our country from the world," said Monti in Florence at the close of his bid for election as premier on the moderate and reformist Civic Choice platform. "The challenge of these elections is between populists and reformists," he continued. The economist and former EU commissioner for competition added that he had chosen to end his campaign in the cradle of the Italian Renaissance because he was "deeply convinced that Italy needs to be reborn on the same basis".
