Bersani claims responsibility for true liberal reforms

Centre-left leader rejects lessons from Berlusconi, Monti

Rome, February 22 - Democratic Party (PD) head and centre-left leader Pier Luigi Bersani on Friday laid claim to Italy's only true liberal reforms during his time as industry minister in the 2006-2008 Prodi government. ''The only liberal things in this country were done by me,'' he told state broadcaster Rai 1. ''I won't take lessons from a right that is populist and supports a strong state, or from Monti,'' continued Bersani in reference respectively to his main centre-right rival, ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi, and outgoing technocrat Premier Mario Monti, who is leading a small centrist and reformist platform in general elections on February 24 and 25.
