Obama thanks Italy for 'tremendous' contributions to NATO

(see related) Washington, February 15 - United States President Barack Obama on Friday thanked Italian President Giorgio Napolitano for his country's "tremendous" contribution to NATO forces on such international missions as Afghanistan. Napolitano used the platform to remind the United States of the progress Italy has made with recent economic and fiscal reforms, and urged that these continue. "Italy has made great progress in the past 14 months, with the understanding and support of different political forces, and this progress can and must continue," said Napolitano, who was expected to brief Obama on the progress of the Italian national election set for February 24 and 25. Obama also offered a little sugar to melt the ice during their meeting, coming one day after Napolitano arrived in Washington on the February 14 Valentine's Day celebrations. "Dear President, I offer you a warm welcome and your arrival on Valentine's Day seems appropriate and allows me to express my love to you and the Italian people," said Obama.
