Impoverished widow, 61, barricaded in tower in pension fight

Pordenone, February 11 - A 61-year-old widow who cares for her disabled son barricaded herself in a castle tower Monday to demand she be given a pension. Teresa Anese, who says she has been living on only 180 euros per month in social benefits, climbed the north tower of the castle of Cordovado, and says she won't budge until her case is reviewed. Supporting her is a group of small-business owners who have been taking on the national tax agency, Equitalia. Anese says she has been caring for her son, an invalid since a car crash, and left her job in a laundry a year ago. She had expected to then begin to collect retirement benefits but instead has only received local social benefits.
