Berlusconi's coalition not too close, says Bersani

Center-left leader has his 'ear to the ground'

Berlusconi's coalition not too close, says Bersani

Rome, February 6 - Centre-left leader Pier Luigi Bersani said on Wednesday that though he had never under estimated the force of the political "right" in the run up to the elections, he did not feel them "breathing down his neck". Bersani, in a radio interview on Radio Anch'io, said that "Berlusconi is calling in his forces and says he is in the passing lane in the polls...but because I have my ear to the ground, I hear many problems that are not part of electoral discussions," said Bersani. Bersani's alliance is in front in the opinion polls with over a third of Italians expected to vote for it, but ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi's centre-right coalition has been gaining ground in recent weeks. The centre left, led by Bersani's Democratic Party (PD), is still favoured to win the election, but it may not have a working majority in parliament.
