Number of new Fiat cars down over 15% in January

Rome, February 1 - Fiat Group's number of car sales were down by 15.76% in January, the Turin-based automaker announced Friday, as the auto market continued to shrink in Italy. There were 34,123 new registered Fiat Group cars in Italy in January, down from 40,508 the same time last year. The data applied to all of Fiat Group's brands, including Chrysler and Lancia. Overall new car registrations in Italy were down 17.58% in January, the transport ministry reported Friday. But Fiat's Italian market share hit 30.06% in the same month, growing by an annualized rate of 0.65%. Spurring its rise are the Panda, Punto and Ypsilon models, which are among the top 10 cars sold in the country. Its 500L, with 34,000 orders already collected in Europe, is the bestselling mid-size car in the country.
