Benedict urges dialogue above 'noise of too much information'

Pope calls for 'nobility' on Facebook, Twitter

Vatican City, January 24 - Pope Benedict XVI marked World Communications Day Thursday by reflecting on social media, calling on Facebook and Twitter users to aspire to the most "noble aspirations" in their posts. In a statement, the pontiff urged social media users to be aware of the value "of dialogue, reasoned debate, and logical argument," and challenged people not to overlook "the discreet voice of reason, which can be dominated by the noise of too much information". Benedict, who since joining Twitter in December under the handle @Pontifex has logged nearly 1.5 million followers on his English feed alone, told the faithful to resist the pursuit of "popularity" online.
