Grilli says no evidence of other banks with MPS's problems

(see related story) Turin, January 24 - Economy Minister Vittorio Grilli said on Thursday that there was no evidence other Italian banks were in the same plight as Monte dei Paschi di Siena (MPS), which has been hit by a derivatives scandal. "The situation of MPS is not a new thing. It's not a bolt from the blue," Grilli said of Italy's third-biggest lender, which needed to request a 3.9-billion-euro bailout from the government last year. "We have known about its problems for a year. I don't have evidence of problems in other banks. "It is the Bank of Italy's competence to do checks".
