Rome, January 22 - Former Italy striker Alessandro Del Piero is venturing into motorsport after joining forces with American actor Patrick Dempsey to create a new team that aims to take part in the Le Mans 24-hour endurance race. It also plans to compete in the American Le Mans Series of endurance races. "I have had a passion for motorsport since I was a young boy growing up in Italy" said Del Piero, who moved to Sydney FC last year after a glorious 19-year stint at Juventus. "I am thrilled at the opportunity to team with Patrick. We expect to compete at a very high level and our central focus will be on winning world championships," added the 38-year-old, who helped Italy win the 2006 World Cup. The new team will be based in the United States. It has submitted an entry to take part in the 24 Hours of Le Mans race with Grey's Anatomy star Dempsey named as one of the drivers, along with Joe Foster and Michael Avenatti.
