Pasta, bread prices rise at double Italy's inflation rate

(ANSA) – Rome, January 17 – The pace at which the price of pasta and bread in Italy increased in the past five years was more than double that of the official inflation rate, according to data released by national statistics office Istat on Thursday. The price of fresh bread in the euro zone's third-largest economy gained 22.1% in September 2012, compared to January 2007, Istat said. The price of pasta gained 36.6% in the period, compared with a consumer price index gain of 14% in the period. The increases are fuelled by gains in producer prices of 40.1% in flour from January 2007 to July 2012.
