Disruption as heavy rain hits Rome, snow falls in province

Rome, January 16 - Intense rain in Rome and snow in higher parts of the surrounding province caused major disruption on Wednesday. Cars were stranded by snow and ice on highways going through a cluster of towns known as Castelli Romani (Castles of Rome) to the southeast of Rome. Police are trying to clear the roads connecting Rome to the Ariccia to the south and cover surfaces with anti-ice salt. Snow also blanketed the Aniene Valley north of Rome, where drivers have been warned to carry snow chains in their cars. The bad weather caused delays at Rome's biggest airport, Fiumicino, too.
