Hotels responsible for guests when robbed, Rome judge rules

'Tourists can seek damages, according to Italian law'

Hotels responsible for guests when robbed, Rome judge rules

Rome, January 10 - A judge in Rome ruled Thursday that personal items stolen from hotel rooms are the responsibility of the hotel. The ruling comes in response to the case of a tourist who, in 2007, had her purse containing 1,700 euros stolen from her room in the historic center of Rome. The guest had specifically requested a room with a safe but was denied. "In case of a robbery, Italian law puts the onus squarely on the hotel," said the ruling, "and the guest has the right to seek remuneration".
