Berlusconi proposes employer tax exemptions on young hires

Rome, January 9 - Former premier Silvio Berlusconi proposed exempting Italian employers from paying social security contributions and taxes for young hires on Wednesday. "We need to do something exceptional," he told Italian television. "We have four million companies in Italy. We could tell them, if you hire just one extra person on a long-term contract you won't pay social security contributions and taxes for three, four, five years. "It's like paying someone under the table". Berlusconi, who was forced to resign in November 2011 amid a peak in the country's debt crisis, is currently campaigning to return to government in Italy, where youth unemployment is soaring.
