Emergency service at risk, says city official

Rome ambulances at standstill, no places in hospitals

Rome, January 9 - Ambulances in Rome were at a standstill on Wednesday because of a lack of places for patients at the city's hospitals, a council official said. Livio De Angelis, the head of Rome's 118 emergency ambulance service, said some of the ambulances had been idle since late Tuesday. He said the ambulance service was "deeply at risk" and wrote a letter to the heads of the city's various casualty departments for the ambulances to be put to work immediately.
