Loan sharks 'asked 800 euros a day' in interest

Naples, January 9 - A loan-sharking gang busted in Campania Wednesday was charging 800 euros a day in interest on the sums they had lent to a lottery outlet owner, police said. Police in the region around Naples, where usury rates are among the highest in Italy and rackets are usually controlled by the local Camorra mafia, arrested all eight members of the gang. Police said the gang had "many other" victims besides the woman whose case led directly to the arrests. Surveys say the recession has pushed more Italians into the clutches of usurers.
