Friends and relatives blame gossip-mongerers for death

Teen suicide triggers hail of Twitter condemnations

Novara, January 7 - Negative gossip may have pushed a 14-year-old to jump out of a window to her death in the northern Italian city of Novara over the weekend, according to a preliminary reconstruction of events Sunday. News of her suicide, which took place between Friday and Saturday night, triggered a torrent of hundreds of Twitter messages from friends and relatives fingering gossip-mongering bullies, investigators found. "What a horrible act you had to do because of bad people," said one Twitter comment. "You shouldn't have given a damn. (You should have) thought of yourself and not what others say," said another. "Tomorrow I have to go back to school…and see those idiots…I can't do it," read yet another. The teenager went to a party with friends the same night she leaped from her parents' window, and was not known to have particular problems or psychological issues. The Carabinieri police and Novara prosecutor's office are conducting a probe, but investigators have neither identified suspects nor formulated a crime. Novara's chief prosecutor, Francesco Saluzzo, called for calm, saying, "Be careful not to launch a witch hunt".
