(ANSA) – Kochi, January 4 - Two Italian marines facing trial in India for allegedly killing two Indian fishermen during an anti-piracy mission have returned from Italy after a Christmas leave. Wearing their military uniforms, Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone arrived in India on Friday at the Fort Kochi hotel where they have been staying since being released on bail, according to ANSA sources. The hotel personnel welcomed the two Italians with necklaces of flowers, a typical Indian welcome gesture. The pair have been at the centre of a diplomatic row between Italy and India after they allegedly shot fishermen Jelestine Valentine and Ajesh Binki off the southern Indian coast last February. They face homicide charges. The marines were released from detention on bail in June, but were confined to Indian territory until they were granted the permit for Christmas.
