Rome, January 3 - Pier Luigi Bersani, head of Italy's Democratic Party (PD), on Thursday said he saw an ''active'' role for Florence Mayor Matteo Renzi in the party's campaigning for February's legislative elections. Earlier Thursday Bersani and Renzi, who was defeated by Bersani in recent party primaries to determine who would lead the PD into the upcoming elections, lunched together in a Rome restaurant. The two politicians were seen alone, unaccompanied by respective staff members. After the lunch, Renzi told reporters: ''It was something we were supposed to do from the days of the [primary] campaigns, the conclusion lunch". During the primaries, which boosted the PD's lead in opinion polls, Renzi was rated higher than Bersani by non-PD voters. The mayor has vowed to be a team player and pundits think he could attract disaffected and independent voters.
