70-year-old woman 'caught picking pockets in Florence'

Rome, January 2 - A 70-year-old woman described by police as a serial pickpocket has been arrested in Florence after authorities tracked her using surveillance cameras in city shopping centres. The woman has denied guilt, blaming a 'competitor' for at least one of the thefts. The woman, who lives in Bologna, was arrested on New Year's Day after police connected her with eight thefts last July. Police say when they arrived at her home, the woman tried to hide a bag with 9,500 euros in cash, which they believe was stolen. Under questioning, the woman denied at least one theft in the Florence area, and named someone else as the culprit. "That is my competitor," she told police.
