Two Italian marines to return to India for legal proceedings

New Delhi, January 2 - A high-ranking Indian official assured Indian news agency PTI that Italy will return two marines in the first week of January to continue legal proceedings in Kerala for the murder of two fishermen, PTI reported on Wednesday. The unnamed official said India held a written agreement with Italy which would be honoured. PTI reported that an Indian press report had cast doubt on the marines' return, which claimed the marines intended to run in Italy's February elections. The marines, Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone, were repatriated on December 22 for a two-week Christmas holiday under special permission granted by Indian judges. The marines' case is extremely delicate and involves the sentiments of the nation, an Italian government source told PTI. The Italian official also expressed hope for a rapid solution through an Indian Supreme Court decision, "which should happen in January".
