Mario monti calls austerity measures 'soft'

Rome, January 2 - Outgoing Italian Premier Mario Monti said on a radio programme on Wednesday that he used a light hand imposing austerity measures during his one-year tenure at the helm of a technical government. "I hit hard? To me it seems I was soft," Monti said in response to a radio host's comment that Monti had "hit hard" with his government's tax increases, spending cuts, pension reforms and other measures to tackle Italy's sovereign debt crisis. Monti spoke on the Radio1 RAI program "Radio Anch'io".
