Berlusconi to pay 36 million euros per year in alimony

Settlement reached with ex-wife after a three-year tussle

Milan, December 28 - Ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi, 76, has reached a settlement with his ex-wife Veronica Lario, 56, Corriere della Sera newspaper reported Friday. The media magnate and centre-right politician will give Lario three million euros a month or 36 million a year but will keep sole possession of his luxury villa outside Milan and his vast business empire will be unaffected, the daily said. The "non-consensual" sentence, ending a three-year legal tussle, was handed down on Christmas Day "in great secret", Corriere said. The couple's marriage ups and downs have been well publicized during their 30 years together. A media firestorm lit up in 2007 when Lario demanded a public apology from her "flirtatious" husband in a public letter to the editor of the La Repubblica daily, which published the contents on the front page. "I am asking for a public apology, given that I haven't received a private one," she wrote in the letter, signing herself as Veronica Berlusconi. Later, driven by Berlusconi's appearance at aspiring showgirl Noemi Letizia's 18th birthday party in 2009, Lario filed for divorce on the basis that she "(could) not stay with a man who consorted with minors". Berlusconi told the gossip magazine Chi when Lario filed for divorce that he regretted the end of his "love story". The couple met in Lario's dressing room after Berlusconi saw her perform in a Milan theatre in 1980, and the couple married in 1990. Berlusconi announced mid-December that he intends to wed for the third time, and is engaged to Naples-born Francesca Pascale, a woman almost 50 years his junior.
