Image of 'bloody hand' made to stun, says town mayor

Shocking posters to deter playing with fireworks in Campania

Naples, December 27 - Shocking posters have been plastered in the southern city of San Giorgio a Cremano near Naples in the run-up to New Year's Eve, when many Italians celebrate by setting off powerful and often illegal fireworks. The annual mayhem regularly results in burns and mutilations. The Campania region around Naples is especially hard-hit, reporting hundreds of injuries yearly, including parts of hands blown off. The poster features a bloody hand hovering over a sign reading "don't let me take your hand". Mayor Mimmo Giorgiano said that the graphic image was made "to shock even the most diehard". Many of the illegal fireworks sold in Italy are actually rudimentary bombs.
