Civil marriages outstrip church weddings in the north

Rome, December 18 - Civil marriages outstripped church weddings in the north in 2011, the national statistics institute said on Tuesday. In northern Italian regions 51.7% of couples chose to get married before a local-authority representative, Istat said in its annual report. Overall in Italy the majority of couples (60.2%) had a religious ceremony. However the statistics institute said fewer people are getting married and increasing numbers are opting for a civil ceremony.
