Italian priest offers to take place of abducted businessman

Lerici (La Spezia), December 18 – A parish priest on Tuesday offered to become a hostage and take the place of a local businessman who was abducted from his villa near the Ligurian city of La Spezia on Sunday. Don Paolo Vegini of Romito Magra said he would replace construction entrepreneur Andrea Calevo, 31, who was kidnapped in Lerici following a break-in at his home. Calevo has business interests in the parish. Meanwhile investigators were examining Calevo's economic and financial situation and aspects of his personal life, as well as his Audi A3, which was found dumped in a river near La Spezia on Monday, mobile phone records and his motorway Telepass record. There has reportedly been no request for a ransom. Calevo's firm, founded by his grandfather, is well known in the region and produces prefabricated building materials.
