Head of state laments politicians' 'logic of conflict'

Napolitano says lack of voting law 'unforgivably serious'

Rome, December 17 - Italian President Giorgio Napolitano on Monday reaffirmed his concern over Italy's future saying that parliament's inability to deliver a new electoral law was "unforgivably serious". President Napolitano told high ranking politicians and institutions during his traditional year-end greeting ceremony that the lack of a new electoral law was worrisome and likely to lead to further political instability when the country casts its vote earlier than expected. Napolitano reminded those present of his "tenacious" insistence that the law be reformed and lamented "the logic of conflict" among political forces which blocked progress. "No one will be able to avoid having to answer to the voters and politics risks paying a heavy price for this deafness," Napolitano said referring to his calls for reform.
