Police confiscate 46 puppies being illegally shipped

Udine, December 17 - Police from Udine near Italy's northern border with Slovenia on Monday seized 46 puppies of various breeds being transported by van in cramped conditions and without proper documentation. The two men shipping the animals, both from the Slovak Republic, face charges of cruelty to animals, commercial fraud, forgery and illicit trade. Police said that many of the puppies had not yet been weaned and others had signs of tail clipping, a practice that is banned in Italy. A state veterinary exam showed that though the dogs were not malnourished, they had no water available for the trip and some risked dehydration. All 46 were taken into state custody and will be released for adoption, police said.
