Car used in kidnapping found empty, dumped in lake

La Spezia, December 17 - A car used in the kidnapping of building entrepreneur Andrea Calevo was found early Monday morning, empty and dumped in a lake, police said. Calevo, 30, was kidnapped after at least three armed men, their faces covered, grabbed about 3,000 euros from the safe at his villa near the Ligurian city of La Spezia, police say. Calveo's mother witnessed the crime, but managed to escape the house and sound the alarm. Authorities are now speculating as to whether the kidnapping began as a burglary, and Calevo was grabbed as an afterthought. They are also revising their earlier report that four attackers were involved. Police later said it may have only been three. "The situation is very delicate, the time factor is essential, as well as the confidentiality of investigations," said an investigator. Meanwhile, an anti-mafia prosecutor in Genoa has activated the protocol that authorities created for kidnapping cases. Calevo's firm, founded by his grandfather, is well known in the region and produces prefabricated building materials.
