Italian flu season to peak over the holidays

Rome, December 17 - Italy's public health institute reported on Monday that this year's flu season which has already clobbered an estimated 69,000 Italians per week and struck 349,350 adults and children so far is expected to peak the week of Christmas. Health officials have registered 1.7 million cases since the beginning of the influenza wave starting in October. The Italian Society of General Medicine (SIMG) estimates that 4 to 6 million Italians will catch the flu before the season ends and encourages anyone not vaccinated to do so. "The objective is to minimize complications like respiratory illnesses that can be caused by influenza," SMIG President Claudio Cricelli said.
