Pope urges athletes to avoid doping

Vatican City, December 17 - Pope Benedict XVI told a delegation of medal-winning Olympic athletes on Monday not to be "tempted by drugs". The pontiff held an audience with the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI), Paralympic and Olympic team members congratulating them on the 28 medals they won at the 2012 London Games. "The pressure to win should never prompt you to take short-cuts," the 85-year-old pope said. Benedict urged team managers and coaches to be "witnesses of good humanity" and "masters of fair and clean sportsmanship". "Patience and humility are the secret to victory, though rarely applauded," he said. Sport is both cultural and educational, with the capacity to "reveal one's deeper human values," said the pope.
