Rome, November 13 - Premier Paolo Gentiloni told trade-union representatives on Monday that he was hopeful of an agreement on an increase in the retirement age to 67, which is due to kick in on 2019, sources present at the meeting said. The unions say many groups of workers doing heavy jobs should be exempted. Economy Minister Pier Carlo Padoan has said only marginal changes can be made without endangering the sustainability of the system. "I think a good job has been done," Gentiloni said, according to the sources. "With the conditions given, the government has presented an important financial commitment. "There are the necessary conditions to give a positive message to the country. I hope it can come about".
