EP Speaker Schulz stands by view on Berlusconi

Strasbourg, December 12 - European Parliament Speaker Martin Schulz has reaffirmed his negative opinion of Silvio Berlusconi's return to politics. "I said what was necessary," Schulz replied when asked Wednesday if he stood by his earlier comments, which provoked a rebuttal from Berlusconi's People of Liberty (PdL) party. Earlier this week Schulz complained that the scandal-plagued former Italian premier was bad for Italy and for Europe. "What Italy and Europe need is stability and Mr. Berlusconi is the opposite of stability," Schulz said while in Oslo for the Nobel peace prize ceremony. "So many of Italy's problems are the results of the 10 years in which Berlusconi was prime minister".
