Tajani says trying to set PdL against Europe is 'distortion'

Brussels, December 11 - European Commission Vice President Antonio Tajani on Tuesday defended Silvio Berlusconi's People of Freedom (PdL) after it came under heavy fire in Europe for bringing down Italian Premier Mario Monti's government. "Every attempt to set the PdL and its leader against Europe and the reforms necessary to get out of the crisis is spurious as it is an attempt to distort reality," said Tajani, who is also European industry commissioner and a PdL member. Several senior European politicians have praised Monti for helping steer Italy out of the centre of the eurozone crisis since he replaced Berlusconi last year by coming to power at the helm of an emergency administration of unelected technocrats. Some have even criticised Berlusconi, who has dropped plans to retire from front-line politics and has said he will run to win a fourth term as Italian premier. The European People's Party (EPP), which the PdL belongs to, on Tuesday criticised the moves that led to Monti to announce on Saturday that he would resign once the 2013 budget law is approved.
