Chancellor convinced voters will keep Italy on 'right path'

Merkel says she supports Monti's reforms

Berlin, December 11 - German Chancellor Angela Merkel said at a press conference Tuesday that she supports "what (Italian Premier) Mario Monti has put in place for reforms". Monti said he would resign from office at the weekend when the 2013 budget law is approved after ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi's People of Freedom (PdL) party withdrew its support from his emergency government. Merkel added that she was "convinced Italian voters will vote in a way to guarantee that Italy stays on the right path". Berlusconi said earlier on Tuesday that Monti has been "too German-centric" as he blasted the effects of the austerity measures his administration has introduced in order to steer Italy away from the centre of the eurozone crisis.
