Berlusconi's party wants 'orderly' end to Monti government

(see related story) Rome, December 7 - Silvio Berlusconi's People of Freedom (PdL) party wants an 'orderly' end to Premier Mario Monti's emergency government, party Secretary Angelino Alfano said Friday after announcing the biggest group in parliament was withdrawing its support. "Yesterday we did not vote against," Alfano told the House referring to the PdL's failure to back the government in two confidence votes on Thursday, "because we would have caused the abyss of a provisional administration. "We want to conclude this parliamentary term in an orderly fashion without sending the institutions and the country to rack and ruin". If Monti's government falls before the budget for next year is passed, it would be necessary to form a provisional executive to push it through parliament.
