Jockey failed drugs test in France in September

Sport: Italian rider Dettori banned for six months

Rome, December 5 - Italian jockey Frankie Dettori was given a six-month worldwide ban from horse riding on Wednesday for failing a drugs test at a meeting at a French racecourse in September. The ban handed down by French racing authority France Galop means the 41-year-old, widely considered the best jockey currently in action, will not be able to return to competition until 19 May 2013. The drug Dettori tested positive for has not been disclosed but the rider's lawyer has said it was not performance-enhancing. According to reports in the British media, cocaine traces may have caused the positive test. "I have been stupid and would like to apologise to all those I have let down including my friends and the many supporters I have been lucky enough to have in racing both fans and professionals," said Dettori, who is based in Britain where he is a popular figure thanks to his outgoing, fun-loving disposition. "In particular I have let down my wife and children and it is for their sake that I am determined to rebuild my career and my reputation in the coming years".
