Pope appeals for Congo

Vatican City, December 5 - Pope Benedict XVI on Wednesday urged the international community to do more to ease a humanitarian emergency in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where the government is fighting rebels. Much of the African country's population had been forced to leave their homes and lacked food, the pope said at his weekly audience. "I therefore renew my appeal for dialogue and reconciliation and I ask the international community to come to the aid of the needs of the population", Benedict said.
